On June 3, 1953, the founding meeting of the Buddhist Association of China was closed in Beijing. The meeting which opened on May 30 selected Dalai Lama and Panchen Erdeni as honorary presidents of the Buddhist Association of China. The association was founded aiming to unite national Buddhists to strive for the development of the new China.
