Sho Dun Festival

As a traditional Tibetan festival, Sho Dun Festival is also called “yogurt festival” or “Tibetan opera festival”.

The festival is held from the first day to the 5th day of the 7th month in Tibetan calendar. It can date back to the time before the 17th century when the festival was a pure religious activity. Later it gradually became a mass festival.

Its main activities include Buddha unfolding ceremony in Drepung Monastery, Tibetan opera performances and having fun in Tibetan gardens. As of the year 2004, the opening ceremony of the festival was set on August 18th every year.
