Riwoche Monastery, which is located in current Riwoqe county in Qamdo prefecture, Tibet, was founded in 1276.
It is famous in the Tibetan areas for its large scale, usually with more than 4,000 resident monks. Only a few large monasteries of the Gelug Sect such as the Drepung Monastery and the Sera Monastery can be compared with it in terms of the number of resident monks. Some scholars believe that the Riwoche Monastery is a monastery of the Karma Kagyu school.
Now, it is still one of the largest monasteries in the Tibetan areas.
